Just before the pandemic hit, Rako Coffee Roasters – a specialty coffee business, became a new customer of PSB at Northern Virginia Industrial Park in Springfield, Virginia. Just like so many other small business owners, sisters Lisa and Melissa Gerben they had to put their dreams of opening various pop-ups around the city aside and pivot.
“With people staying at home, we wanted to give them the ability to deep-dive into the coffee. You can really pull out flavors in different ways when you’re brewing,” says Gerben who was interviewed for an article in the Washingtonian.
To help bring their coffee to the masses, they launched an online marketplace and offered free shipping for orders in the DC area. Even as a newly launched small business, they understood the importance of supporting those affected in other industries. For every coffee sale, the company donates 10 percent to the Power of 10 initiative, which provides employment to hospitality workers and meals for first responders and those in need.
